Cheryl Barker studied in Melbourne with Dame Joan Hammond and in London with David Harper. One of the finest Sopranos to emerge from Australia, Cheryl is particularly noted internationally for her performances of Madama Butterfly, singing this role in England, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Wales, America, Taipei and Australia.
Cheryl has established a distinguished opera career throughout the UK, Europe, USA and Australasia. She has appeared at London's Barbican, Royal Albert Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall, Halle Orchestra and Edinburgh/ Spoleto Festivals.
She appears regularly with Opera Australia, where her roles have included Countess/Le nozze di Figaro, Mimì in the award winning Baz Luhrmann production of La bohème, Violetta/La traviata, Donna Elvira/Don Giovanni and the title roles in Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Jenufa, Rusalka, Arabella and Salome for which she won Green Room and Helpmann Awards.
2016 roles include Miss Jessel/Turn of the Screw/Strasburg, Bravo Cruise of Performing Arts and Kiss Me Kate/Qld Opera.
Recordings include Puccini Arias, Pure Diva (Melba Recordings), Seduction & Persuasion, Don John of Austria, Beethoven 9 (ABC Classics), La bohème, Madama Butterfly/Opera Australia, Madam Butterfly (Chandos), Madama Butterfly (Belgium/Netherlands Television), Katya Kabanova, Makropolous Case, Rusalka and Great Operatic Arias (Chandos).
Cheryl holds an “Order of Australia” awarded in the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honour and also holds an honorary Doctor of Music conferred by the Victorian College of the Arts.
