About St Vincent’s

St Vincent’s is part of Australia’s largest not-for-profit healthcare network. We are governed by a national body, St Vincent’s Health Australia under the direction of Mary Aikenhead Ministries.

St Vincent’s provides acute medical and surgical services, emergency and critical care, aged care, diagnostics, rehabilitation, allied health, mental health, palliative care and residential care. We have more than 5,000 staff, an operating budget of $491 million and 848 beds.

For 117 years, under the leadership of the Sisters of Charity and now Mary Aikenhead Ministries,

St Vincent’s has been providing the highest standards of care driven by our concern for others, especially those in need. This focus permeates every aspect of our work, guided by the values of compassion, justice, human dignity, excellence and unity.

We excel across a broad spectrum from neurosurgery and surgical oncology to aged psychiatry and Aboriginal health. We have an enviable reputation as an employer of choice for nursing graduates and our employees’ results in medical and surgical examinations are second to none.

St Vincent’s works with collaborative partners to deliver high quality treatment, teaching, education and research. Our partners include the University of Melbourne, St Vincent’s Institute, the O’Brien Institute, the Bionic Ear Institute, Eastern Palliative Care and the Australian Catholic University.

St Vincent's Foundation was established in 1998 to initiate and coordinate fundraising activities for the support of the hospital and its related services. The Foundation provides an important link between St Vincent’s and individual donors, corporate and business sector supporters, community groups, external trusts and foundations, sponsors and those wishing to leave a legacy or gift in their Will.

Cancer in Australia

Cancer is now the number one cause of death in Australia. Every day, 290 people are told that they have cancer – more than 106,000 people each year. Government is predicting an anticipated growth in the need for treatment of 40% over the coming 10 years.

Statistics indicate that 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85.

Today, more than 25,000 of those diagnosed are living in Victoria.

St Vincent’s Cancer Centre

St Vincent’s is widely recognised as an excellent provider of cancer services, and is one of five leading providers of cancer care in Victoria. We perform a statewide role in cancer surgery, with a focus on breast cancer, bone cancer, lung, bowel and brain cancers, cancers of the head and neck and ENT cancers. St Vincent’s has a wide range of clinical, research and education resources dedicated to cancer care, as well as a first-class system of supporting services. We pioneer new treatments, new surgical procedures and provide a total care plan for all of our patients.

Every day 115 people are treated for cancer at St Vincent’s. The aim of the new centre is to house all outpatient cancer consultations and treatment services, our clinical research teams and the many cancer services departments in the one area of the hospital. This will be undertaken in a two-stage process.

The St Vincent’s Cancer Centre will encourage a sense of wellbeing through the use of natural elements such as light, space, wood, water, stone and low noise. These environmental features complement the world-class care we currently provide. On walking into the Centre, you will immediately recognise the patient-centred focus that has guided this service for over 30 years. Patients, family members and staff will experience a sense of security, confidence and calm to counter the physical and mental burden that cancer care can often generate.
