The OITM Story
Graeme Wall
Strolling up the K shed on a non-market day, Margot and I unleashed the sounds of Verdi and Mozart we had performed with the Victoria State Opera many years earlier. The raked floor and high vaulted ceiling provided an acoustic to rival any concert hall and on that day the idea for Opera in the Market was born. Creating the “K Shed Opera House” is an exciting production in itself. Before the first waving of the baton, 15 specialized contracting companies work hand in glove for 26 hours, non-stop. Logistically, it is certainly a challenge. Not only has Opera in the Market grown to be a highlight in the performance program of Australian Music Events, it has emerged as a significant event on Melbourne’s annual calendar. We are thrilled that so many young and talented musicians and solo artists are able to work alongside leading professional musicians in such an unusual, yet familiar setting. We are equally delighted to provide a stylish yet casual space in which guests can discover the world of opera and support medical research at the same time. Since its inception, Opera in the Market has been aligned with medical research and we are working closely with the Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation to further advance this goal. |
